(WOC), an international children's advocacy group dedicated to honoring exceptional child advocates from around the world. WOC has named Aronson as one of the finalists for its annual 2006 Humanitarian Award. The WOC awards program is comprised of three awards: the Humanitarian Award, the Health Care Award, and the World of Children Founder's Award. The honorees hail from India, Chile, Canada and the United States and were chosen from hundreds of nominations worldwide. Award winners will be announced during a ceremony at UNICEF House (3 UN Plaza) in New York City, on Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m. EST. Aronson is one of three finalists for the Humanitarian Award. This award was established to recognize courageous people who brighten children's future by greatly improving their opportunities to learn and grow. The award is accompanied by one $50,000 and two $2,000 grants. The finalists are: -- Jane Aronson, MD, USA: Aronson is the founder and executive medical director of Worldwide Orphans Foundation (WWO), seeking to save, enrich and enhance the lives of children living in orphanages around the world. WWO's accomplishments include bringing live-saving antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) to Vietnamese and Ethiopian orphans; conducting the first NGO training conferences on pediatric HIV/AIDS in Vietnam and Ethiopia; creating Early Intervention ("granny") programs in Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, and Viet Nam; and establishing on-site schools in Vietnam for orphans who are not allowed to attend school because they have HIV/AIDS. WWO is pioneering a family HIV treatment program and planning to build a school in Ethiopia. Currently, WWO has programs in 12 different countries and addresses the medical, emotional and developmental needs of orphans and vulnerable children so they may grow up to become productive citizens of their countries. -- Susan Krabacher, USA: After spending a month traveling through Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Krabacher and her husband started the Mercy and Sharing organization, a charitable organization dedicated to serving children through education and nutrition. Krabacher has come to the aid of around six thousand children to date and she is currently creating an endowment for the long-term support of these children contributing an annual amount of over $100,000. Her compassion has gained her the respect of the children, who call her "Mama Blanche." -- David Lynch, USA: After a series of trips to Tijuana, Mexico serving as a volunteer to the poor, David Lynch realized that it was only education that would lift the children of Tijuana out of poverty. Leaving a teaching position in New York City, Lynch founded Responsibility Inc. The organization serves 400 Mexican children each year and also functions as a medium for 2,500 U.S. students that volunteer their time to aid children in need. From its inception in 1992, Lynch's program has placed a majority of its kindergarten graduates a full year ahead on the Mexican public school system entrance exam. Founded in 1998, the World of Children was created to recognize and provide financial assistance to those making a difference in the lives of children through its annual awards program, The World of Children Awards. Nominated by their peers, Award honorees are chosen during a three part selection process, which includes a review by the Selection Committee and the International Advisory Council with final approval from the World of Children Board of Governors. An independent investigation is also conducted to establish credibility and accurate representation of each candidate. ----- The mission of Worldwide Orphans Foundation is to identify the immediate and long-term medical, developmental, social and emotional needs of children living in orphanages and to provide direct services to improve their quality of life. Founded in 1997 by renowned adoption medicine specialist, Dr. Jane Aronson, WWO has established humanitarian programs in Ethiopia, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Serbia/Montenegro, Azerbaijan and China. Two of its major programs are HIV/AIDS treatment programs for orphans in Vietnam and Ethiopia.
