Controllers lost radar and radio contact with the plane, a twin-engine Cessna 303, shortly after it departed South Bend Regional Airport about 8 p.m.

Information on those killed was not immediately released.

The plane was about 10 miles southwest of South Bend when it disappeared, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said. There were no indications of trouble before the plane vanished from radar, officials said.

Searchers found the plane about an hour later in a field in rural eastern LaPorte County. The aircraft was destroyed, the FAA said. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were en route to the scene.

The plane was traveling to Ankeny, Iowa, with four people aboard, according to the flight plan filed with the FAA. FAA records showed the plane was registered to CPRT Investment Inc. of Atlantic, Iowa.
