Authorities said 21-year-old Dana Solomon was walking home when a vehicle struck her. They said the driver left the scene of the crash.

The crash took place in the 14000 block of Normandy Boulevard, west of Cecil Field, not far from Solomon's home.

She was taken by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol's report on the incident, several factors could have contributed to the hit-and-run crash. The two-lane highway has a posted speed limit of 60 mph. It was dark at the time of the crash, about 7 p.m., the victim was wearing dark clothing, and there are no street lights in the area.

"We don't know why the victim was walking in the road way. It's very dangerous to do that, particularly in that unlit area, wearing dark clothing," said FHP Lt. Bill Leeper.

He said investigators have very little information to work with, and detectives have been asking that the driver involved come forward and provide some answers.

It's illegal to leave the scene of an accident, but Leeper said depending on the circumstances, the drive might not be charged.

"It just depends on why the individual left the scene. It's against the law to leave the scene of a crash, particularly involving damage, injury or death," Leeper said.

Police said witnesses described the car that hit Solomon as a small blue or green pickup truck with damage to its right side. They said the vehicle was traveling east on Normandy Boulevard at the time of the crash.
